The origins of Chinese martial arts can be traced back to the third millennium BCE, with many of the traditional styles recognized today having been developed between the 16th and 19th centuries.

The philosophical foundations of these arts are rooted in the three main determinants of Chinese thought: Confucianism, Daoism, and Chan Buddhism. Wing Chun, as a product of these philosophical currents, encapsulates a variety of fundamental principles and maxims through its training methods, often without the adherence to numerous external traditions. The integration of philosophy, meditation techniques, and Chi exercises (where Chi, or Qi, represents internal energy or life force) is subtly embedded within the practice of Wing Chun.
